The absence of the figures of athletes in my drawings of trophies and the projection of their shadows speaks to an individual's remnants of accomplishments. One-hit wonders as some would say, these achievements rarely ever carry with us through time. The dehumanization of the figure and it’s ambiguity add to the artificiality of human success.

As a Mexican-American artist, this work is about continuously transforming and attempting to become something new, fusing the imaginary and the real, archiving achievements of the past in hopes of being able to strive for something greater. In the process, the work captures active poses of peak athletic performance, watering down the accomplishment through reproduction, ultimately becoming something without value. As an athlete and an artist, the paradox of competition is exactly what has motivated me.
